Subacute thyroiditis
ICD-10: E06.1
Thyroid
Haematoxylin & Eosin (H&E)
46 years
female
46-year-old female suffered from sore throat and fever. A partial resection of the unilaterally enlarged thyroid gland was performed.
- In part, regular thyroid gland tissue exhibiting signs of increased stimulation. Adjacent parenchyma destroyed and partially scarred. - A chronic inflammatory infiltrate is observed consisting of lymphocytes, plasma cells and histiocytes. The follicular epithelium is destroyed by invading lymphocytes. - Formation of foreign body giant cell granulomas around colloid material. Some multinucleated giant cells contain ingested colloid material. - Stromal fibrosis.
Usually, this type of thyroiditis only affects part of the gland. Therefore, hypothyroidism rarely ensues and most cases spontaneously resolve within a few months. The initial phase of the disease is frequently accompanied by hyperthyroidism (also compare: slide 270).
