Toxic epidermal necrolysis
Haematoxylin & Eosin (H&E)
86 years
Generalised maculopapular and bullous exanthema. Large areas of denudation of the epidermis.
Preserved Stratum corneum. Epidermis with several apoptotic keratinocytes and large areas of recent necrosis. Vacuolar degeneration of the basal cell layer and formation of a subepidermal bulla. Sparse superficial perivascular lymphocytic inflammation.
Erythema multiforma and toxic epidermal necrolysis can not be distinguished by morphology alone. Further clinical information (for example the extension of the skin lesions) is required.
