Acinic cell carcinoma
Salivary Gland
Haematoxylin & Eosin (H&E)
54 years
Tumor in parotid gland.
Circumscribed tumoral mass with mostly solid, focally microcystic growth pattern and focal lymphoid infiltrate. The lesion is composed of different cell types. First there are large, polygonal serous acinar cells with abundant, slightly basophilic, granular cytoplasm. The granules are diastase-resistant and refer to zymogen granules (see slide ID 1479 for diastase-PAS staining). Second there are intercalated duct type cells which are smaller, eosinophilic and vacuolated and show clear, cytoplasmatic vacuoles which are negative with PAS and mucicarmin. Some clear cells with “empty” cytoplasm and prominent cell borders can be seen.
