Type A thymoma
Haematoxylin & Eosin (H&E)
52 years
52 years old woman with a mediastinal tumor (9cm).
Spindle cells Tumor with different growth patterns: Cysts, rosettes without lumina and glomeruloid structures. Few lymphocytes, No mitoses.
The lymphocyte count should be <10% (no clear cut definition). The majority of spindle cell thymomas are low grade and encapsulated. Immuhistochemistry with cytokeratins demonstrate the epithelial origin of the tumor. Epithelial cells in 50% of cases positive for CD20 (!). Invasive or atypical spindle cell thymomas can follow aggressive behaviour.
