Type B2 and B3 thymoma
Haematoxylin & Eosin (H&E)
47 years
47 years old woman with a mediastinal tumor.
The tumor is composed of an approximately equal admixture of round epithelial cells and lymphocytes (B2). Some smaller parts of the tumor are composed of more epithelial cells with only scant lymphocytes (B3). The epithelial cells show mild degree of atypia and nuclear enlargement.
The combination of a type B2 together with a Type B3 thymoma is not uncommon (15-30%). This type is stable, in late relapses usually the same combination is found (no progression to a type B3 thymoma).
